![]() First off, if you would like to read this blog post then please click the title you see above or "read more" to continue. Seismic activity calmed during the late hours of Christmas Eve (depending on where you live) but volcanic activity at both Mt. Etna in Italy and Mt. Anak Krakatau in Indonesia seems to be skyrocketing. In this blog post I will quickly show seismic data for the recent, and strange, M3.6 earthquake in New Mexico. After that, I will show a good amount of seismic data for the recent eruptions and increases in activity at Mt. Etna in Italy. Remember professionals say Etna is sliding into the sea. This was discovered months before this recent increase in activity. Could this recent increase cause the active volcano to slide into the sea quicker than they thought? That is entirely possible but we will have to wait and see. I will first very briefly talk about the New Mexico seismicity and then I will show the info and data for the Etna events. ![]() Hey guys I am back once again! Sorry it has been a while since I have put out a blog post. Life has been pretty crazy and busy lately and as time goes on my YouTube videos and blog posts may slow down. Do not fret! I will always still be around. But in order to advance my career in seismology, there will be times in the future where I do not post any content. However if anything major occurs worldwide, and especially in the United States, just know I will report it as soon as I can. Well there was a M3.3 earthquake in Texas reported recently along with another M3.0. Although the station is some distance away, this earthquake should have shown higher frequencies than what we saw. But this earthquake seemed to have low frequency characteristics, with another event about an hour or two prior that was smaller but carried the same characteristics. So why was that event not reported? Also, about 6 hours or so prior to the M3.3, there were some interesting low frequency events. One did look like a mine blast but the others are likely not to be mine or quarry blasts. There was also a M2.2 earthquake that struck in Massachusetts on the east coast of the USA that contained some very high frequencies. What does all this mean? I don't know. But the activity in Texas reminds me of some deep magma movement, most likely deeper than 5-8km, but that is just my theory. So it is nothing major but I will present the data and you be the judge. There was also a strange M5.5 in SE Africa not too far from Mayotte. There was also a very peculiar M2.5 chemical explosion at the Oroville Dam in California. What could it be caused by and why would there be any major explosions at a dam??? Just as always, please click the title of this post or "read more" to continue... ![]() Hey guys. If you monitor my YouTube channel you may have already watched my recent video about the Dotsero Volcano in Colorado. There has been some very interesting seismicity as of late and there was just another earthquake reported for December 14, 2018. 2018 has seen the highest seismicity for the Dotsero Volcanic area. The seismicity is not occurring directly under Dotsero, but is occurring just to the west. I personally believe most of the events that occur near Glenwood Springs, Colorado (just west of Dotsero where seismicity is increasing) are connected to the Dotsero magma system. I do not have sufficient proof yet but that is what I truly believe. There was also another unreported earthquake just prior to the M2.5. Both of these events will be shown and both events have very peculiar characteristics. In my opinion, the characteristics of these sequences confirm tectonic activity is most likely out of the question. Since many of the events are emergent and contains multiple micro-quakes within such a short amount of time, it is likely these swarms are being caused by some type of other process (magma or hydrothermal). I am unsure what caused December 14's swarm but the frequencies seemed a little lower than recent rapid fire events at West Thumb Lake. I will show some of the data pertaining to this event so please click the title of this post or "read more" to continue... ![]() Hey guys. Sorry I have not been doing many blog posts or videos lately. Life has been pretty crazy. However I have a new laptop on the way with a brand new $100 video editing software I am going to be using for my videos and for my website. I have been updating a few pages on my site here so always remember to browse around to see if anything was changed or added to. Now in the past day, at the time of writing this, there was a magnitude 7.1 earthquake that struck south of South America and south of the South Sandwich Islands. There has also been a sequence of three M3.0+ quakes near Glenwood Springs in Colorado. I will simply show some data for these events. Earthquakes do occur in Colorado from time to time so these quakes are not that crazy. However they do appear to be connected and I am currently unsure which fault they are striking on, if indeed they are tectonic in nature. Also Steamboat Geyser in the Norris Geyser Basin at Yellowstone National Park and Caldera erupted for the 30th time just a few days ago. This means 2018 is now the most active year ever on record. What could this mean for the infamous supervolcano? As always, please click the title of this post or "read more" to continue. ![]() November 30, 2018 was an interesting day for earthquakes in North America. Anchorage, Alaska got hit by it's biggest earthquake in years and almost 1,000 aftershocks of all magnitudes have struck the area since the earthquake hit. Scientists believe this earthquake ruptured a fault that leads to the northwest, past Anchorage. This quake caused a lot of damage and made seismic stations in the area go haywire, not to mention stations elsewhere in the world. During the time period of this earthquake and subsequent aftershocks, there was a slight increase in seismic activity for the Pacific Northwest. A few quakes occurred in Washington state and a few occurred off the coast. I will show some simple data real quick. Please click the title of this post or "read more" to continue! |
