Yellowstone Caldera, WY

Feb. 2020 Yellowstone Swarms

2/11/2020

Picture
January 2020 was one of the most mediocre and boring months for activity at Yellowstone. However, once February hit, microquake swarms started to increase around the infamous national park, including the caldera itself as well, and even a couple rapid-fire swarms like those we witnessed in 2018 (CLICK HERE for my page about the 2018 rapid-fire swarms at Yellowstone). This post is made to keep track of these earthquake swarms with brief information and seismic plots.

This post will continue to be updated as activity progresses through the month of February 2020. Please click the title of this post or "read more" to continue...

Nov. 2019 - Two Small Energetic Swarms and a Strange Event

Yellowstone has been fairly quiet in past months. However, there were 2 minor rapid-fire swarms in November 2019 along with a strange event I cannot wrap my head around. Please click the title of this post or "read more" to continue...

Aug. 31 Swarm - Continuation of Aug. 29th's Rapid-Fire Swarm

As expected, another rapid-fire swarm broke out virtually in the same location as the August 29, 2019 earthquake swarm. This swarm, the most recent on August 31, was about half of the strength and size as the August 29, 2019 swarm. In this post I will show the usual seismic plots and seismic audio. Could more swarms be on the way? It is possible, but I think the seismicity is calming down for now. However, those have been some famous last words for people in the past (including myself)!

Aug. 29, 2019 - Largest Rapid Fire Swarm since 2018 New Years Eve

In the afternoon/evening of August 29, 2019, the strongest rapid-fire swarm to strike Yellowstone since late-2018 occurred. It was a typical strong rapid-fire swarm which struck along the East Mount Sheridan fault system.

The characteristics of this swarm are indicative of some type of magmatic fluid migration, likely hydrothermal fluids which do commonly transport up towards the surface. I will show the usual seismic plots and seismic audio to this earthquake swarm.

July 23 - Lower Geyser Basin Swarm

7/23/2019

For about 12 hours or so on July 23, 2019, a moderate swarm broke out to the east of the Lower Geyser Basin area at Yellowstone National Park. In this post I will show the usual seismic data and audio pertaining to this earthquake swarm. I will also show this swarm did not occur on any particular fault structure, so it is likely this was a fluid-driven earthquake swarm (as are many swarms at Yellowstone due to the large hydrothermal system underlying the surface). On June 19, 2019, two small earthquake swarms struck Yellowstone Caldera. One struck south of West Thumb Lake and another swarm, albeit far smaller, struck somewhere along the southeastern shores of Yellowstone Lake, near station YTP. I will simply show some plots and seismic audio pertaining to these events. If you wish to continue, please click the title of this post or "read more"...

June 12 - Rapid Fire Swarm S of West Thumb Lake

Spectrogram plots detailing most of the June 12 rapid fire swarm (in order of time in UTC).
On June 12, 2019 a rapid-fire earthquake swarm struck in a linear pattern just south of West Thumb Lake. This is the largest rapid fire swarm to strike Yellowstone Caldera for the past few months. These types of events used to be somewhat rare, but have been increasing ever since 2017-2018. Many of these swarms are small, but some can reach many hundreds of events within a short time period. This post is the analysis page for this earthquake swarm. This post also contains seismic audio. Please click the title of this post or "read more" to continue...

    About

Please click a post title to view the data pertaining to that event!

This is the seismic events page for Yellowstone National Park and Caldera, which resides in northwest Wyoming. Yellowstone is an absolutely massive caldera super-volcano. It sits at a shocking perimeter of 34 by 45 miles (55 by 72km) and that is only the caldera boundary! A caldera is created when land immediately erupts and collapses, while the magma chamber almost completely empties, creating a crater imprint called a caldera. Some calderas around the world are small in comparison (i.e. Kilauea) to other calderas formed by super-volcanic eruptions (i.e. Yellowstone in Wyoming or Long Valley in California).  Yellowstone is theorized to contain a magma chamber and a much deeper, much larger magma reservoir just beneath the chamber. This two-chamber system is also theorized to be caused by a "magma plume". Magma plumes are thought to draw their eruptive ability from deep within our planet, possibly from our lower mantle. That is why volcanoes caused by magma plumes are much more dangerous and far more unpredictable than their counterparts that are caused by normal tectonic forces. Yes, many volcanoes are caused by tectonic forces as one plate attempts to breach or dip beneath another one. A perfect example of this is the Cascade Range on the West Coast of the United States. Many volcanoes in the world are caused by this but some, the more unpredicatble ones, are caused by magma plumes.

Remember to always pay attention to all chart labels! All images were generated by myself using the IRIS DMC seismic archive and the FREE seismic program S.W.A.R.M.
