First off, if you would like to read this blog post then please click the title you see above or "read more" to continue. Seismic activity calmed during the late hours of Christmas Eve (depending on where you live) but volcanic activity at both Mt. Etna in Italy and Mt. Anak Krakatau in Indonesia seems to be skyrocketing. In this blog post I will quickly show seismic data for the recent, and strange, M3.6 earthquake in New Mexico. After that, I will show a good amount of seismic data for the recent eruptions and increases in activity at Mt. Etna in Italy. Remember professionals say Etna is sliding into the sea. This was discovered months before this recent increase in activity. Could this recent increase cause the active volcano to slide into the sea quicker than they thought? That is entirely possible but we will have to wait and see. I will first very briefly talk about the New Mexico seismicity and then I will show the info and data for the Etna events. If you haven't already, please click the title of this post or "read more" to continue reading.

Hey guys I am back once again! Sorry it has been a while since I have put out a blog post. Life has been pretty crazy and busy lately and as time goes on my YouTube videos and blog posts may slow down. Do not fret! I will always still be around. But in order to advance my career in seismology, there will be times in the future where I do not post any content. However if anything major occurs worldwide, and especially in the United States, just know I will report it as soon as I can. Well there was a M3.3 earthquake in Texas reported recently along with another M3.0. Although the station is some distance away, this earthquake should have shown higher frequencies than what we saw. But this earthquake seemed to have low frequency characteristics, with another event about an hour or two prior that was smaller but carried the same characteristics. So why was that event not reported? Also, about 6 hours or so prior to the M3.3, there were some interesting low frequency events. One did look like a mine blast but the others are likely not to be mine or quarry blasts. There was also a M2.2 earthquake that struck in Massachusetts on the east coast of the USA that contained some very high frequencies. What does all this mean? I don't know. But the activity in Texas reminds me of some deep magma movement, most likely deeper than 5-8km, but that is just my theory. So it is nothing major but I will present the data and you be the judge. There was also a strange M5.5 in SE Africa not too far from Mayotte. There was also a very peculiar M2.5 chemical explosion at the Oroville Dam in California. What could it be caused by and why would there be any major explosions at a dam??? Just as always, please click the title of this post or "read more" to continue... Hey guys. If you monitor my YouTube channel you may have already watched my recent video about the Dotsero Volcano in Colorado. There has been some very interesting seismicity as of late and there was just another earthquake reported for December 14, 2018. 2018 has seen the highest seismicity for the Dotsero Volcanic area. The seismicity is not occurring directly under Dotsero, but is occurring just to the west. I personally believe most of the events that occur near Glenwood Springs, Colorado (just west of Dotsero where seismicity is increasing) are connected to the Dotsero magma system. I do not have sufficient proof yet but that is what I truly believe. There was also another unreported earthquake just prior to the M2.5. Both of these events will be shown and both events have very peculiar characteristics. Please click the title of this post or "read more" to continue. Rapid fire earthquakes have been increasing near the West Thumb Lake area (just west of Yellowstone Lake) the past few years. In my opinion, the characteristics of these sequences confirm tectonic activity is most likely out of the question. Since many of the events are emergent and contains multiple micro-quakes within such a short amount of time, it is likely these swarms are being caused by some type of other process (magma or hydrothermal). I am unsure what caused December 14's swarm but the frequencies seemed a little lower than recent rapid fire events at West Thumb Lake. I will show some of the data pertaining to this event so please click the title of this post or "read more" to continue... Hey guys. Sorry I have not been doing many blog posts or videos lately. Life has been pretty crazy. However I have a new laptop on the way with a brand new $100 video editing software I am going to be using for my videos and for my website. I have been updating a few pages on my site here so always remember to browse around to see if anything was changed or added to. Now in the past day, at the time of writing this, there was a magnitude 7.1 earthquake that struck south of South America and south of the South Sandwich Islands. There has also been a sequence of three M3.0+ quakes near Glenwood Springs in Colorado. I will simply show some data for these events. Earthquakes do occur in Colorado from time to time so these quakes are not that crazy. However they do appear to be connected and I am currently unsure which fault they are striking on, if indeed they are tectonic in nature. Also Steamboat Geyser in the Norris Geyser Basin at Yellowstone National Park and Caldera erupted for the 30th time just a few days ago. This means 2018 is now the most active year ever on record. What could this mean for the infamous supervolcano? As always, please click the title of this post or "read more" to continue. November 30, 2018 was an interesting day for earthquakes in North America. Anchorage, Alaska got hit by it's biggest earthquake in years and almost 1,000 aftershocks of all magnitudes have struck the area since the earthquake hit. Scientists believe this earthquake ruptured a fault that leads to the northwest, past Anchorage. This quake caused a lot of damage and made seismic stations in the area go haywire, not to mention stations elsewhere in the world. During the time period of this earthquake and subsequent aftershocks, there was a slight increase in seismic activity for the Pacific Northwest. A few quakes occurred in Washington state and a few occurred off the coast. I will show some simple data real quick. Please click the title of this post or "read more" to continue! Hey there. I have a few things I want to show real quick. Steamboat erupted for the 28th time just a little bit ago (at the time of writing this). It was not as strong as most 2018 eruptions but lasted for quite a while. It was also preceded by a very small micro quake swarm near the Norris area. The swarm actually occurred during the Steamboat eruption too but the quakes were very tiny. Maybe around -0.3 to 0.5 with the largest probably being about 0.9 or so. Idaho also saw a very strong earthquake, but not in Soda Springs! It was all the way on the opposite side of the state. Alaska also saw a large, and deep, 5.7 earthquake just as volcanic activity at Veniaminof volcano in Alaska started to skyrocket. Could that 5.7 be related to the increase in activity? PLEASE CLICK THE TITLE OF THIS POST OR "READ MORE" TO READ MORE! Hey guys. There has been some interesting activity once again! The Olympic Peninsula in Washington state, which doesn't see magnitude 4 quakes too much, got struck by a 4.1 and then a M1.3 aftershock. The North Pole also saw a magnitude 4.4 earthquake and Yellowstone just recently saw a very weird 9-minute earthquake swarm with peculiar characteristics. I will show the data from these events. PLEASE CLICK THE TITLE OF THE POST OR "READ MORE" TO READ MORE!!! Steamboat's 27th Eruption, Federal Way Quake in WA State, Quakes in Soda Springs and New Jersey...11/15/2018 Hey there guys. I have some interesting stuff to show in this post. I will show the data for the most recent Steamboat Geyser eruption at Yellowstone, an earthquake that some people felt in Federal Way and near where I live, the recent earthquakes in Soda Springs, and a very strange earthquake that occurred near New Jersey. To continue this post, please click the title or "read more"! Hey there guys. A very interesting earthquake just struck off the east coast of Greenland, north of Iceland. It occurred just 75 miles (120km) west of Jan Mayen Island. It was a magnitude 6.8 earthquake at 10km in depth and it occurred at 1:49UTC November 9, 2018, which is also 5:49pm Pacific Time November 8, 2018. I will show seismic helicorders and plots of this event. PLEASE CLICK THE TITLE OF THIS POST OR "READ MORE" TO READ MORE! Starting at about 1:43UTC November 8, 2018 (6:43pm Mountain Time November 7, 2018) there was another increase in seismicity near the Maple Creek/Hebgen Lake area. It was a swarm of about 10 earthquakes or so and many were very small. The University of Utah and USGS did report 6 of the earthquakes so they were able to locate the majority of them. These earthquakes occurred between 9.8km and 12km in depth. This blog post will simply show plots and helicorders of this small swarm. PLEASE CLICK THE TITLE OF THIS POST OR "READ MORE" TO CONTINUE... Steamboat geyser in the Norris Geyser Basin has officially erupted for the 26th time. The all time record was achieved in 1964 when it erupted 29 times. We are approaching the end of the year but if these eruptions continue at near the same pace, then it will beat the record by the time the year ends. The 26th eruption occurred at 23:16UTC on November 7, 2018 (4:16pm Mountain Time, November 7, 2018). Below are the two helicorder images of this event along with two 3-plot analysis images. Please ALWAYS read chart labels first!
YNM felt this eruption the strongest. YNR felt it 2nd and B950 did not feel this event at all. Why? The vibrations you see are most likely only surface vibrations of this event, not the vibrations from the free-flow of super-heated water leading to an eruption. For proof of this please CLICK HERE to visit my article about recent steamboat eruptions. Let me know what you think! Have a good day! I recently uploaded a video detailing the re-emergence of a very strange vibration. It carries dominant low frequencies of around 0.1HZ-0.3HZ but the weirdest thing about this event is the fact that it is showing on a large majority of seismic stations from Washington state all the way to the east coast in New York. Whatever this may be, it has been seen before. This vibration is one of the first puzzling discoveries I ever made in regards to seismology. This vibration/tremor is quite strong, though not strong enough to feel, and lasted about 36 hours or so from around 1:00UTC October 27, 2018 to around 12:00UTC October 28, 2018. It is hard to pick a definite beginning for this event since it is very emergent (meaning it is very slow-building). This post will quickly show new data sources that confirm beyond a shadow of a doubt that this "tremor" is quite real and may occur again at any time. PLEASE CLICK THE TITLE OF THIS POST OR "READ MORE" to continue this post! At 4:54PM Mountain Time October 25, 2018 (22:54UTC October 25, 2018) a very large M6.8 earthquake struck off the southern coast of Greece. It was very shallow for an earthquake of this magnitude so it really shook up Greece! This area is seismically active and does have large earthquakes from time to time. The largest was apparently a 7.3 on October 6, 1947. However what is interesting with this earthquake is that there was a smaller foreshock just before the 6.8. Also, about 3 hours later, a magnitude 2.9 earthquake struck Montana just about 20 miles northwest of Bozeman. I will show the helicorders first and then the seismogram/spectrogram plots for these different events. PLEASE CLICK THE TITLE OF THIS POST OR "READ MORE" TO CONTINUE!!! Seismic activity seems to have increased once again at Yellowstone! From 3:17pm Mountain Time October 24, 2018 (21:17UTC October 24, 2018) to 9:06am Mountain Time October 25, 2018 (15:06UTC October 25, 2018) there were two areas that saw an increase in activity virtually around the same time. The Maple Creek area saw an increase as well as the West Thumb lake area. However the earthquakes that occurred near West Thumb lake occurred farther south than we usually see. Seismic station YDD, which resides just a few miles south of YLT, saw these earthquakes arrive first. To continue this post, PLEASE CLICK THE TITLE ABOVE OR CLICK "READ MORE" BELOW! |
